**Dogface**

Winning piece of the People's Choice for the 2026 California Welcome Center Art Contest, local California artist Kim Lowe

Original oil on canvas, 30 in x 36 in x 1.5 in

Dogface is a striking tribute to California's offical state insect, celebrated for its vibrant presence and unique spot in California's natural history. This piece honors the butterfly not just for its final, radiant beauty, but for the grueling, hidden struggle of metamorphasis it endured to get there. Set against an atmospheric backdrop in California's state colors of blue and gold, it stands as a powerful testament to survival, showing that our greatest transformations often require fighting through the deepest dark to finally take flight.
